Prof. Dr. Sandra Martins Pereira is FCT Principal Investigator (equivalent to Research Associate Professor) at CEGE, Research Center in Management and Economics, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, where she coordinates palliative care research activities within the Ethics and Sustainability Research Area. She was Director of the Institute of Bioethics, coordinator of the Ph.D. Program in Bioethics, and member of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Medicine at UCP.
Sandra leads studies on the ethical dimensions of palliative and end-of-life care, including end-of-life decisions and the integration of palliative care across healthcare settings (e.g., intensive care, burns, psychiatric care, home care, cancer care, dementia). She applies social sciences and humanities theories, methodologies, and frameworks to different fields of Biomedicine, Biotechnology, and Health Sciences.
Sandra is PI and Team Leader in Portugal of six EU-funded projects on the following topics: (i) Improved supportive, palliative, survivorship and end-of-life care of cancer patients; (ii) Novel approaches for palliative and end-of-life care for non-cancer patients; and (iii) Ethics in science with and for society. She also acts as Independent External Ethics Advisor and member of International Advisory Boards of various EU-funded projects. Sandra was Vice-President of the European Association for Palliative Care and is currently member of various taskforces and reference groups of this association.
